FAQ
A view of instructor Kate Denby's spiritual home off Ireland's west coast: the Great Blasket Island.
How does combining dance and yoga work? Can this class be right for me?
Below are answers to some common questions about the practice.
IS THIS PRACTICE LIKE TRADITIONAL YOGA?
Yoga Dance with Kate is much more of a movement practice than traditional yoga. It's also music-driven by design. (While traditional yoga teachers sometimes play music, interpreting that music is not the focus of the practice.) Those who are familiar with yoga will recognize the poses we'll flow through, but Yoga Dance with Kate is definitely its own experience!
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR TO CLASS?
Comfortable clothing (stretchy or loose-fitting) is best, and light layers are a good idea as your body heat will rise as your heart rate increases. Feet can be bare or in sneakers, though socks are not prohibited (those with grips on the bottom are strongly recommended for your safety).
HOW LONG IS EACH CLASS?
Kate's online (Zoom) classes are 50 minutes.
DO I NEED A YOGA MAT?
No, you will be moving around the room.
SHOULD I KEEP A BOTTLE OF WATER NEAR ME?
Yes! You'll be surprised how quickly you work up a thirst!
I'M NOT IN VERY GOOD PHYSICAL SHAPE. SHOULD I STILL TRY THIS CLASS?
Yes! The beauty of this practice is that it's yours. You are free to move as vigorously or as easily as you like, and as much or as little as you like. Let finding the variations that work for you become part of your practice. You can even do this in a chair. Of course, if you're healthy, have the approval of your doctor and are eager to challenge yourself, it's also a good way to get back in shape.
I DO A LOT OF YOGA, BUT I DON'T THINK OF MYSELF AS A DANCER.
WOULD THIS CLASS SUIT ME?
Yes! The chakra work from yoga is a core part of this practice. You will recognize many yoga poses, though the way we flow gently through them will be different. This class is a great complement to a yoga practice because it introduces an aerobic component. Think of it as a conscious movement class with music to inspire you. It's yoga plus. It's letting your yoga dance!
I'M NOT A BIG FAN OF YOGA, BUT I DO LOVE TO DANCE.
WOULD THIS CLASS SUIT ME?
Yes! This practice addresses and balances the chakras (energy centers of the body) and includes traditional yoga poses, but it is not traditional yoga, and anyone who loves dance will find much to enjoy. Think of it as a movement class that uses an eclectic range of music to get you moving in safe and beneficial ways.
I HAVE WEAK ANKLES AND/OR KNEES. IS THIS CLASS SAFE FOR ME?
Yes. You can do the entire class from a chair if you wish, or as needed. (Instructor Kate Denby teaches a full class to a community of wheelchair users once per month.) You'd be amazed what a terrific workout you can get from a chair with the right moves and music.
ARE CHILDREN WELCOME?
Children over the age of 5 are absolutely welcome. All of the movements are easy to follow, and kids love to dance. Many parents report that they enjoy practicing with their children very much, as it's an experience that brings joy to everyone and is a pleasure to share.
